Hi to my friends and family,

MAY is Mental Health Awareness month and as many of you know, support for the mentally ill is a cause I am passionate about. I am honored to serve on the board of Mental Health Advocacy Services (MHAS) which is doing its part to help. If you can spare a quick moment, read on....

MHAS gives free legal advice and counsel to low-income people with mental health disabilities in its mission to protect and advance the rights of people in this vulnerable community.

I joined MHAS as a volunteer over two years ago and I am in awe of their work. The passion and commitment the staff and team have for this at-risk community is boundless. Without adequate support and care, those who suffer from mental illness may face homelessness, poverty, drug addiction and incarceration. MHAS works tirelessly to provide support to more than 3,000 clients per year, offering invaluable services in the areas of public benefits, housing discrimination, employment barriers, consumer finance, and homelessness prevention. In the short time I’ve been working with MHAS, I have met a number of people whose lives have been forever changed by receiving the help they needed to achieve autonomy and self-sufficiency, and the chance to live the life they choose. The success stories of Tommy and Luz (highlighted below) are just the most recent examples of how MHAS can and does create lasting change for its clients.

Mental illness, homelessness, COVID-19....the conjunction of the three can overwhelm to even contemplate. What else to do but march forward and help where we can? It’s “bird by bird” as the expression goes. If you are in the position to offer some support to this wonderful organization, I will be most grateful.

Thank you.
